Forestry Technician (Recreation)

Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans. Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas. Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s). Serves as a fee collection officer. Inspects recreation areas, trails, areas of concentrated public use, and special use activities authorized by permits for compliance with the permits, management plans, public health, and safety. Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and trails and takes or recommends corrective action. Cleans both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalizes sites where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage. Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, trails, travel management, and safety. Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations. Provides information on resource management practices, regulations, and current conditions. Collects, compiles, and summarizes information for recreation and trail data management systems. Provides input for programming and planning. Plans and implements projects associated with trail maintenance and construction and reconstruction projects. Reports work completed. Monitors the condition and use of trails. May be required to obtain Forest Protection Officer certification and perform law enforcement responsibilities using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), watercrafts, and snowmobiles to patrol unit roads, trails, or waterways ensuring protection of forest property, land, and visitors. On occasion, directs or leads one or two lower-graded employees engaged in recreation and trail maintenance. Makes day-to-day assignments and ensures quality of completed work. You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level. Specialized experience is defined as:
Inspected recreation area clean-up operations and performed safety hazard analysis of public recreation use areas; patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; performed site maintenance, including cleanup and naturalizing at widely dispersed sites; gathered, compiled, and reported recreation program data for use in monitoring and assessment activities and summarized data for use in recreation data management systems. -OR Successful completion of 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
